HARLAN F. STONE
Harlan F. Stone sends a typed letter explaining were the works will go.
Typed Letter Signed: "H.F. Stone" as Dean of the Columbia Law School, 1p, 8x10½, on official stationery but written from Isle au Haut, Maine, 1915 July 28. To Professor Kirchwey. In full: "I have proceeded far enough with the arrangements for next year to know definitely that all your work will be provided for. Gifford or I will do the Personal Property I. Abbot has volunteered to take your Property III and Quasi Contracts if we relieve him of the Domestic Relations Rogers who did the Mining Law course once before very acceptably will take that and I think I have a man for the Admiralty. The only difficulty with this program is that I fear we are putting too much on Abbott. It therefore might be well to let Boke do the Quasi Contracts if he were interested. Will you at your convenience let me know what you learn of his effectiveness as a teacher. I have an impression that his work at Yale was not a great success but this may be a mistake. Yours sincerely," Several handwritten edits made by Stone. GEORGE W. KIRCHWEY was Dean of the Columbia Law School from 1901-1910, then returned to the law school faculty. In this letter, Stone tells Kirchwey he has found professors to teach Kirchwey's courses "next year". From 1915-1916, Kirchwey was Superintendent at Sing Sing. Stone, who had succeeded Kirchwey as Dean in 1910, left Columbia in 1924 to become Coolidge's Attorney General. Appointed Associate Justice by Calvin Coolidge in 1925, HARLAN FISKE STONE served until 1941 when Franklin D. Roosevelt promoted him to Chief Justice where he served until his death in 1946. Folds, vertical fold touches "e" in Stone. Lightly creased. Overall, fine condition.
