Typed Letter signed: "Harlan F Stone" as Associate Justice, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1939 November 18. On official letterhead to Eames MacVeagh, Washington, D.C. In full: "In reply to your letter of the 13th, I am obliged to leave town to attend Mr. Justice Butler's funeral in St. Paul. After I return here the middle of next week I shall be glad to have you come in at some mutually convenient hour, to read me what you have written. I suggest that when you are ready to come you call up (Decatur 0210) and arrange to come in, probably around five o'clock in the afternoon when I return from Court. Yours sincerely". Harlan Fiske Stone (1872-1946) decreased corruption in the Justice Department while serving as U.S. Attorney General (1924-1925). Appointed as an Associate Justice by President Calvin Coolidge, Stone served for 16 years (1925-1941) before being appointed as the 12th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1941-1946) by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. A progressive Republican, Stone had voted to uphold most but not all of FDR's New Deal legislation. Stone's greatest contribution to the Court was his belief in judicial self-restraint; he felt that judicial review should not be affected by the justices' personal views. Light mailing folds.
