US", 7½x4¾. MORRISON REMICK WAITE (1816-1888) was appointed the seventh
Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (to succeed Salmon P. Chase) by President
Grant in 1874. Waite, who first came to prominence for representing the U.S. in the
Alabama claims, was largely responsible for helping to interpret Amendments adopted after
the Civil War to the U.S. Constitution. Assuming a large portion of the work of the Court, he
wrote over 1,000 opinions in his 14 years on the bench. Appointed by James Buchanan on
January 21, 1858. NOAH SWAYNE (1804-1884), who moved from Virginia to Ohio
because he opposed slavery, was active in the formation of the Republican Party. Appointed
by Abraham Lincoln on January 27, 1862, Swayne served as Associate Justice until he
retired on January 24, 1881. Slightly soiled. Swayne's title, which he has written with a
different pen, has run slightly. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
