Revolutionary War payment for marching expenses to Peekskill.
ADS: "O. Ellsworth" as member of the Committee, 1p, 8x6¾. Hartford, 1777 December 3. To John Lawrence, Treasurer of Connecticut. In full: "Pay to John Allyn Sixty Eight Pounds Three Shillings & four pence-marching Expense of his Militia Compy to Peekskill and charge the State." Also signed: "John Chenward" as member of the Committee. Receipt signed: "John Allyn" on verso. Peekskill, N.Y. is in the southeast portion of New York State relatively close to the Connecticut border. Ellsworth, a representative in the General Assembly of Connecticut, signed this document as a member of the Connecticut Committee of Four, also known as the "Pay-Table", that handled all of the military finances for Connecticut during the Revolutionary War. He represented Connecticut in the Continental Congress from 1777-1784 and was a Judge of the Connecticut Superior Court from 1785-1789. He was one of Connecticut's first two U.S. Senators, serving from 1789 to March 8, 1796, when he resigned, having been appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by President Washington. He retired in 1799. Folds, horizontal fold touches signature. 3/8x1/8 slit touches one letter. Light ink transference. Overall, fine condition.
