Free-Soil Democrat, later a Republican, sends Senate reports.
ALS: "S.P. Chase", 1p, 7¾x9¾. Senate Chamber, 1850 June 17. To an unnamed recipient. In full: "I send you all you ask for except the Report of the Omnibus Committee & W. Carey Jones' Report. The former is exhausted; the latter has not yet been printed for the use of the Senate. Will the Radicals of Pa. support the Hunker nominee for Canal Commissioner." Chase served as Senator from Ohio from 1849-1855 when he became Governor of Ohio. He returned to the U.S. Senate on March 4, 1861, but resigned two days later having been appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Lincoln. He resigned from the Cabinet on July 1, 1864, and was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by Lincoln on December 6, 1864. He served until his death in 1873. Soiled on verso, no show through. Folds, horizontal fold touches signature. ½-inch separation at blank right horizontal fold. Lightly creased.
