First Day Cover honoring the People's Right to Petition for Redress, two 10-cent stamps affixed, postmarked Tampa, Florida, November 4, 1977, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. WARREN E. BURGER (1907-1995), a Republican appointed by President Richard Nixon, served as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1969 until his retirement in 1986. WILLIAM H. REHNQUIST (1924-2005), a Republican who had been appointed an Associate Justice by President Nixon in 1971, served in that capacity from 1972 until 1986, when President Ronald Reagan nominated him to succeed Burger as Chief Justice; he served until his death in 2005. LEWIS F. POWELL, JR. (1907-1998), a Democrat appointed Associate Justice by President Nixon in 1971, served under both Burger and Rehnquist, retiring in 1987. JOHN PAUL STEVENS, (1920-2019) a Republican appointed by President Gerald Ford in 1975, also served under Chief Justice Burger and continues to serve on the Court. DAVID SOUTER, (born in 1939) a Republican appointed by President George Bush, has served as an Associate Justice since 1990. ANTHONY KENNEDY, (born in 1936) a Republican appointed by President Ronald Reagan, has served on the Court since 1988. Slightly rippled. Fine condition.
