First Day Cover honoring Oliver Wendell Holmes, four 15-cent Holmes stamps affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., March 8, 1968, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. WARREN EARL BURGER (1909-1995) was nominated by President Nixon to replace Earl Warren as Chief Justice in 1969. Burger served as Chief Justice until 1986, when he was succeeded by William H. Rehnquist. WILLIAM J. BRENNAN, JR., (born in 1906) appointed by President Eisenhower, was an Associate Justice from 1956-1990. BYRON WHITE, (1917-2002) appointed by President Kennedy, was an Associate Justice from 1962-1993. LEWIS F. POWELL, JR., (born in 1907) appointed by President Nixon, was an Associate Justice from 1972-1987. JOHN PAUL STEVENS, (1920-2019) appointed by President Ford in 1975, still serves on today's Rehnquist Court. SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR, (1930-2023) the first woman Associate Justice, was appointed by President Reagan in 1981 and served until 2006. ANTHONY M. KENNEDY, (born in 1936) appointed Associate Justice by President Reagan in 1988, also serves on the Rehnquist Court. DAVID SOUTER, (1939-2025) appointed by President George H.
