Seven Justices, appointed by six different Presidents, sign a First Day Cover honoring Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes.
First Day Cover signed: "Warren E Burger", "Lewis F Powell, Jr.", "Sandra D O'Connor", "Byron White", "David Souter", "Wm G Brennan, Jr" and "John Paul Stevens", 6½x3½. FDC in the Prominent Americans series, honoring former Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., postmarked Boston, Massachusetts, June 14, 1978, two 15-cent stamps affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Chief Justice WARREN BURGER, appointed by President Nixon, presided over the Court 1969-1986. LEWIS POWELL, also appointed by Nixon, served 1972-1987. WILLIAM BRENNAN, appointed by President Eisenhower, was an Associate Justice 1956-1990. BYRON WHITE, appointed by President Kennedy, served 1962-1993. SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR, appointed by President Reagan, served 1981-2006. Two signers, JOHN PAUL STEVENS (appointed by President Ford in 1975), and DAVID SOUTER (appointed by George Bush in 1990), remain on the Court as of late 2008. Six of these signers served concurrently on the Burger Court from 1981 to 1986. Justice Souter, who replaced Brennan, joined the Rehnquist Court after the departure of Burger and Powell. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., appointed to the Court by Theodore Roosevelt, served 1902-1932. Fine condition.
