Associate Justice by President Nixon in 1972, succeeding John M. Harlan. In 1986, he was
appointed Chief Justice by President Reagan, succeeding Warren E. Burger. Chief Justice
Rehnquist presided over President Clinton's impeachment trial (1998-1999) and it was
the Rehnquist Court that voted 5-4 on December 12, 2000 to stop the Florida vote
recount, resulting in Gore's concession on December 13th and the election of President George
W. Bush. WILLIAM J. BRENNAN, JR. (1906-1997), appointed Associate Justice by
President Eisenhower, served from October 6, 1956 until his retirement on July 20, 1990. He
believed that only by making the Constitution a "living document" could America's system
of government keep up with the needs of society -- in direct opposition to the "strict
constructionist" approach of conservative colleagues such as Justices Rehnquist and Scalia.
POTTER STEWART (1915-1985), also appointed by Eisenhower, was Associate Justice
from 1958-1981. When he retired, he was replaced by Sandra Day O'Connor, the first
woman Associate Justice (appointed by President Reagan). Lightly creased, rippled at
cachet. Slightly soiled at blank left edge. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of
21¾x33¼.
