First Day Cover signed: "William Rehnquist", "Byron White", "Lewis F. Powell Jr", "John Paul Stevens", "Anthony Kennedy", "David Souter", "Clarence Thomas", "Ruth Bader Ginsberg", 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring the U.S. Constitution and its preamble, Washington, D.C., August 28, 1987, one 22¢ stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Cachet is a pen and scroll with the first 25 words of the Preamble of the Constitution. These justices did not serve together on one court, since Ginsberg replaced White. Selected by six Presidents, these Justices span over 40 years of American judicial history. REHNQUIST (1924-2005) was nominated to the Court as Associate Justice by President Nixon in 1972 and as Chief Justice by President Reagan in 1986; he served until his death in 2005. WHITE (1917-2002) was nominated by President Kennedy in 1962, retired in 1993 and died in 2002. POWELL (1907-1998), nominated by President Nixon in 1971, retired in 1987 and died in 1997. STEVENS, born in 1920, nominated by President Ford, has served since 1975. KENNEDY, born in 1936, nominated by President Reagan, has served since 1988. SOUTER, born in 1939, and THOMAS, born in 1948, both nominated by the first President Bush, have served since 1990 and 1991, respectively. GINSBERG, nominated by President Clinton, has served since 1993. Fine condition.
