REHNQUIST (1924-2005) was appointed Associate Justice by President Richard M. Nixon on January 7, 1972. President Ronald Reagan appointed Rehnquist as Chief Justice on September 26, 1986; he served until his death in 2005. As Chief Justice, Rehnquist presided at President Clinton's impeachment trial in 1999. WILLIAM J. BRENNAN, JR. (1906-1997), appointed Associate Justice by President Eisenhower, served from 1956-1990. BYRON R. WHITE (1917-2002), appointed Associate Justice by President John F. Kennedy, served from 1962-1993. Appointed by President Lyndon Johnson, THURGOOD MARSHALL (1908-1993), the first Black American Associate Justice, served from 1967-1991. HARRY BLACKMUN (1908-1999), appointed by President Richard Nixon in 1970, served as an Associate Justice until retiring in 1994. JOHN PAUL STEVENS (born in 1920) was appointed Associate Justice by President Gerald R. Ford in 1975. SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR, (born in 1930) the first woman on the U.S. Supreme Court, was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981; she retired in 2006. ANTHONY M. KENNEDY (born in 1936) was appointed Associate Justice by President Reagan in 1988. DAVID SOUTER (born in 1939) was appointed Associate Justice by President George Bush in 1990. Kennedy, Stevens and Souter still serve on the Supreme Court. "Sandra" in O'Connor's signature light but legible. Minor crease at lower right background of engraving. Mat slightly soiled.
