Postcard Photograph signed on verso: "Chief Little Deer" in pencil. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso: "Autographed July 6, 1950 at Mountain View Motel, Colorado Springs, Colorado. This is the hoop dance with three of his four sons." Chief Little Deer (1891-1972), whose Anglicized named was Joseph Tafoya, Sr., was a prominent Pueblo Indian leader from the 1920s, pursuing democratization of tribal government and indoor plumbing. During the 1940s he was Chairman of the All Pueblo Indian Council. A veteran of World War I, fluent in five languages, he worked actively to keep his people's traditions alive through dance and other ceremonies. Five generations of Little Deers have kept alive the dance traditions. Chief Little Deer's grandson, Bob Swift Eagle Tafoya, now heads the Cliff Dweller Dancers, who perform internationally. Lightly worn at corners. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show-through). Fine condition.
