CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD MOVIE CAST: WILLIAM HURT, MARLEE MATLIN
Laserdisc cover for Children of a Lesser God, signed by leads Hurt and Matlin. Children of a Lesser God was Matlin's feature film debut and won an Oscar for her performance as the deaf Sarah Norman.
Laserdisc cover signed "Marlee Matlin" in silver ink and "William Hurt" in blue ink. Color, 12¼x12¼. Two disc set, not included. ©1986 and 1995 Paramount Pictures. Children of a Lesser God (1986), based on the Mark Medoff play, starred William Hurt as a teacher at a school for the deaf and Matlin as one of the students he falls in love with. Matlin appeared in the stage production of Children of a Lesser God. She won an Oscar for her performance as Sarah Norman, even though it was her movie debut. HURT, born in Washington, DC in 1950, won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1985 for Kiss of the Spider Woman and was nominated for Oscars in the same category for Children of a Lesser God (1986) and Broadcast News (1987). Hurt, who made his debut in 1980 in Altered States, became a star and sex symbol with his next film Body Heat (1981), opposite Kathleen Turner. His other film credits include The Accidental Tourist (1988), Lost in Space (1998), A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) and Tuck Everlasting (2002). He's has also appeared in made-for-TV movies and was nominated for a Tony Award for Hurlyburly (1985). Comic book fans may recognize him as crime underboss Richie Cusack from A History of Violence (2005) and as Gen. Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross from The Incredible Hulk (2008). A bout of roseola rendered MATLIN, born in Morton Grove, Illinois in 1965, almost completely deaf at the age of 18 months. Never permitting her affliction to impede her ambitions, Matlin launched her stage career at age 8, playing Dorothy in The Wizard Oz. She starred in the leading role of Sara in a stage production of Children of a Lesser God. She repeated this role in the 1988 film version, and in so doing became the first deaf actress to win the Academy Award (1989). From 1991 through 1993, Matlin starred as assistant district attorney Tess Kaufman on the weekly TV series Reasonable Doubt, which won her two Golden Globe nominations, and from 1995 to 1996 she played Mayor Laurie Bey on the Emmy Award-winning Picket Fences. She also has four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Seinfeld (1994), Picket Fences (1994), The Practice (2000) and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2004). Lightly creased. Parts of Hurt's signature are faint but legible. Light impressions from disc on cover. Light scratches on cover (not visible head-on). Random ink stains. Dents on right edge. Rounded corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
