A bout of roseola rendered MATLIN, born in Morton Grove, Illinois in
1965, almost completely deaf at the age of 18 months. Never permitting her
affliction to impede her ambitions, Matlin launched her stage career at age 8,
playing Dorothy in The Wizard Oz. She starred in the leading role of
Sara in a stage production of Children of a Lesser God. She repeated this
role in the 1988 film version, and in so doing became the first deaf actress to
win the Academy Award (1989). From 1991 through 1993, Matlin starred as
assistant district attorney Tess Kaufman on the weekly TV series
Reasonable Doubt, which won her two Golden Globe nominations, and
from 1995 to 1996 she played Mayor Laurie Bey on the Emmy Award-winning
Picket Fences. She also has four Emmy nominations for Outstanding
Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Seinfeld (1994), Picket Fences
(1994), The Practice (2000) and Law & Order: Special Victims
Unit (2004). Lightly creased. Parts of Hurt's signature are faint but
legible. Light impressions from disc on cover. Light scratches on cover (not
