CHRIS EVERT
She writes about the hours preceding her 1980 U.S. Open semifinal match with the woman who had defeated her in the 1979 finals.
Typescript signed: "Chris/Evert", 1p, 8½x11. "An excerpt from Chrissie: My Own Story by Chris Evert Lloyd". In part: "I hung up the phone in the room at the Berkshire Palace hotel in New York and started to cry. Not tears of pain, fear or sorrow specifically, just emotion. 'What's the matter, lovey?' John asked, a husband sensing his wife's uneasiness on the night before the most important tennis match of her life...it had taken me a painfully long time to convince myself that I was ready to face Tracy Austin in the semifinals of the 1980 United States Open championships...." Chris Evert defeated Austin in the 1980 semifinals and Hana Mandlikova in the finals to win her fifth U.S. Open. Evert was married to tennis star John Lloyd from 1979-1987. In her tennis career, she won 157 singles titles, 18 Grand Slam singles titles (seven French, six US Open, three Wimbledon and two Australian) and three Grand Slam doubles. With a 1,309-146 won-lost record, she has a .899 winning average, the highest in pro history. Creased. Fine condition.
