CHRISTA McAULIFFE
Rare First Day Cover Signed, postmarked on the day the Challenger exploded, matted and framed with her photo and a plaque, in the Gallery of History style to 24x18.
Rare Philatelic Envelope signed: "S. Christa McAuliffe", 6½x3½. 22-cent stamp picturing the U.S. flag and the Capitol building affixed, postmarked Kennedy Space Center, Florida, January 28, 1986. Sharon Christa McAuliffe (1948-1986) taught junior high school in Maryland (1970-1978) and Concord, New Hampshire (1978-1979) and high school in Concord (1980-1985) before being selected as the primary candidate for the NASA Teacher in Space Project on July 19, 1985. She was a payload specialist on Challenger STS-51L which was launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, at 11:38 AM on January 28, 1986. McAuliffe and her six colleagues were killed when Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launch. Because collectors find it easier to obtain authentic signatures of astronauts before their flights than after with all the publicity, some send blank envelopes to be signed, affix postage, go to the Kennedy Space Center post office and have the signed envelope hand-cancelled on the date of the flight. That is what happened in this case. This is the ultimate signed McAuliffe space cover. Fine condition. Framed in Gallery of History style: 23½x17¾.
