CHRISTO
The artist pens his name on this 37x25¼ poster depicting the Japanese site of his
expansive installation, The Umbrellas
Poster signed: "Christo" in black crayon, color, 37x25¼. Captioned: "Christo: The Umbrellas,
Japan - USA, 1984-91. Ibaraki, Japan Site." © 1991 by Christo. American artist CHRISTO
(b. 1935), born Christo Javacheff in Bulgaria, met Jean-Claude (Denat de Buillebon), the
daughter of a French General, in Paris in 1958. The couple had one son, Cyril Christo (born
in 1960), who became a poet. Christo and Jeanne-Claude first collaborated on a 1961
project to wrap a public building, Stacked Oil Barrels, Dockside Packages at Cologne
Harbor. Christo had first attracted attention for his "wrapped" objects, extreme examples of
the modern art form known as "earthworks." The artist's early pieces included small objects
(bottles, cans and boxes) wrapped in plastic or cloth. His later works were more grandiose in
scale: wrapped buildings and constructions such as Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin
Counties, California, 1972-1976, an 18-foot high nylon ribbon that ran 24 miles through
two counties, as well as the work shown in this piece. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
