Christopher Isherwood sends an autograph note to a collector.
Autograph Note signed: "Christopher Isherwood", 1p, 5½x3¼. Santa Monica, California, 1970 October 2. Postcard addressed in Isherwood's own hand to Doug Voegler, Lincoln, Nebraska, postmarked and imprinted with a 5-cent stamp. In full: "Here's one more item for your collection, with my best wishes." Among the first openly gay authors to attract a wide popular following, Isherwood (1904-1986) is best remembered for his Berlin Stories (1935-1939), which became the basis for the popular stage and film musical Cabaret. Born in England, he lived in the U.S. from 1939 until his death. A convert to Hinduism, Isherwood translated many works from that faith into English. California's Huntington Library, the repository for Isherwood's correspondence with key literary figures including close friend W. H. Auden, has staged a special exhibition on Isherwood (July 6-October 3, 2004). Mounting tape stains from address side show through lightly, touching "woo" of signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
