CHRISTOPHER ISHERWOOD
Christopher Isherwood inscribes his typescript to "The Last of Mr. Norris".
Typescript inscribed and signed: "For Norman,/from/Christopher Isherwood/October 8 1980", 1p, 8½x11. The beginning of "The Last of Mr. Norris" (Chapter One, The Berlin Stories). Among the first openly gay authors to attract a wide popular following, Isherwood (1904-1986) is best remembered for his Berlin Stories (1935-1939), which became the basis for the popular stage and film musical Cabaret. Born in England, he lived in the U.S. from 1939 until his death. A convert to Hinduism, Isherwood translated many works from that faith into English. California's Huntington Library, the repository for Isherwood's correspondence with key literary figures including close friend W. H. Auden, has staged a special exhibition on Isherwood (July 6-October 3, 2004). Fine condition.
