CINCINNATI REDS: JOE MORGAN and GEORGE FOSTER
Speed and power components of the Big Red Machine pen their names on this baseball
Baseball signed: "Joe Morgan", "George Foster/Best Wishes/#15". Standard-sized baseball with no printed markings. In more than two decades as a Major League second baseman (1963-1984), JOE MORGAN (1943-2020) won five Gold Gloves and made the All-Star team ten times. He won consecutive National League Most Valuable Player Awards in 1975-1976. Not coincidentally, his Cincinnati Reds "Big Red Machine" won the World Series both of those years. Four times he led the league in On Base Percentage, which was very bad news for opponents since he stole 689 bases in his career. He even led the league in slugging percentage in 1976. Now an Emmy Award-winning baseball analyst for ESPN, Morgan was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1990. GEORGE FOSTER (b. 1948), a 6'1", 180-lb outfielder became an important cog in Cincinnati's Big Red Machine of the 1970s. He made a name for himself as a powerful, productive hitter who had five of the best seasons of any player of his time. Foster's three consecutive RBI championships (1976-1978) tied a Major League record. In 1977, his MVP year, he hit .320 with 149 RBI and 124 runs and blasted 52 HR to become only the seventh NL player to hit 50 or more in a season. He hit three straight homers in a July 14th game that season, and his 31 road homers set the Major League record for right-handed batters. In 1978, Foster again led the NL with 40 HR. Slightly soiled. Fine condition. While Morgan and Foster were teammates in Cincinnati 1972-1979 (Foster was there from '71 to '81), the team made the postseason five out of eight years, including back-to-back World Championships in 1975 and 1976. Morgan would single or walk, inspiring fear in opposing pitchers as he danced off first, and then Foster or one of the other Reds sluggers would drive him in. Soiled and lightly scuffed. Otherwise, fine condition.
