THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR: the USS MONITOR and CSS VIRGINIA
A steel engraving of the two ironclad ships at battle at the mouth of Hampton Roads, Virginia
Steel Engraving Unsigned: 11x8 with a white border (one surface). The Battle of Hampton Roads was a turning point in navy technology that impacted naval warfare until WWI. The battle took place from March 8 to March 9 in 1862. After the CSS Virginia had already destroyed two wooden Union ships, the USS Monitor arrived. The Virginia was a retro-fitted steam frigate that was limited. It's heavy armor, battering ram, and large guns let it easily prey on wooden warships, but against the Monitor it was a little overmatched. The Monitor was designed as an ironclad ship in the first place. It maneuvered in the water much easier and featured guns that turned. They fought to a stalemate after hours of pounding each other with gunfire, but the Monitor emerged from the fight in better shape. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
