CIVIL WAR: UNION - WILLIAM R. RIDDLE
As a company commander in the Invalid Corps, he certifies that John H. Place is a Private in Company D, 6th Regiment
Autograph Document signed: "Wm R. Riddle/Captain D. Co. 6th Rgt. I. C. [Invalid Corps], 1 page, 7½x6½. Rush Barracks [District of Columbia], 1864 February 25. In full: "This is to certify that John H. Place is a Private in Company D, 6th Regiment I. C." The Invalid Corps of the Union Army, later renamed the Veterans Corps, consisted of wounded soldiers still fit for light duty. Most of these men would have been eligible for medical discharge, but remained in the service to aid the Union cause. No personal information on Captain William R. Riddle is available, other than that he was newly assigned to the 6th Regiment (February 13, 1864), after previous service with the 19th Regiment. Riddle's transfer may have signaled that his medical condition was improving, since the 6th Regiment, I .C. was assigned fairly demanding duties, guarding the approaches to Washington, D.C. Members of the Regiment were even cited for a "gallant" charge on enemy scouts during Confederate General Jubal Early's raid on Washington (July 1864). Because reserve troops were able to fend off the Rebel attack, the raid got President Lincoln some bad press, but did not achieve Early's true aim: to force General Grant's withdrawal from his advance across Virginia toward the Confederate capital at Richmond. Heavily soiled and toned. Multiple mailing folds. Edges frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
