CIVIL WAR (UNION): CAPTAIN F. S. PALMER
As a company commander in the Invalid Corps, he acknowledges an error in the Company pay rolls
Autograph Endorsement signed: "Ford. S. Palmer/Captain 27th Co. 2nd Batt I. C. [Invalid Corps], 1 page, 8x5. Campbell Hospital, D. C., 1863 October 16. Responding to a query from another officer concerning an erroneously dated pay roll, he replies in full on verso: "The entry is undoubtedly an error made by the person a sergeant who did the writing on the rolls. They statements are all made by the parties themselves. I think it should be June 30th 1863". The Invalid Corps, later renamed the Veterans Reserve Corps, was composed of injured Union soldiers still able to perform light duties. Since many of these soldiers, including the officers, would have been eligible for medical discharges, their continued service evidenced a desire to keep serving the Union cause. No personal information is available on F. S. Palmer. Heavily creased. Lightly toned. Minor pin-size holes near edges. Edges frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
