AMERICAN CIVIL WAR: NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS
George Stephenson signs an autograph letter to the colonel commanding his artillery regiment, urging that his lieutenant's commission be made official so that he can see to the re-supply of his company.
Autograph Letter signed: "Geo. Stephenson", 1 page, 7¾x9¾. Camp Sill, Harper's Ferry, Virginia, 1864 February 1. To Lt. Colonel Edward Murray, Commanding, 5th Artillery Regiment, New York Volunteers. In full: "I humbly beg to state that I have forwarded an application to your office for my discharge on the 16th Jan. 1865 for the purpose of being mustered in as 2nd Lieutenant. The Commission I received on 26th Dec, 1864. Since then I have had a nominal command of Company G 5 Arty NY Vol. I can neither take over the Company property or receive any transfers, until such time as I am mustered, and the Company is in great measure deficient of various stores such as G.M. and ordnance. I beg to call your early attention to the above matter, as being very important at the present. I have the honor to be Colonel Your Most Respectfully and Obedient Servant". The 5th Artillery Regiment, New York Volunteers, was attached to the Army of the Shenandoah, commanded by General Phillip Sheridan. It participated in many battles of the Shenandoah Valley campaign, including Sheridan's decisive victory at Cedar Creek, October 19, 1864. Horizontal fold creases. Left edge chipped and slightly ragged. Edges lightly notched at folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
