CIVIL WAR - UNION: 3rd and 16th NEW YORK VOLUNTEER ARTILLERY
Letter to Civil War General Joseph J. Morrison, who was trying to locate a fellow soldier.
Autograph Letter signed: "F. C. S.", 1 page, 6x9½. St Louis, Missouri, 1891 March 3. On letterhead of the Southern Hotel to "J. J. Morrison/353 Broadway, New York". In full: "my Dear General, Your letter has been forwarded to me here. In answer to your request I will inform you that Lt. Col. J. H. Ammon is living and his address is c/o Harper Brothers, Franklin Square, New York City, the large publishing house. John H. Ammon was formerly Capt. of Light Battery I of the 3rd NY Artillery. His battery reduced Fort Macon in North Carolina in 1862. He resigned from the 16th N. Y. Volunteer Artillery on account of sickness. He was an excellent officer. Yours truly". Although the writer of this letter is unidentified, its recipient and subject are not. Joseph J. Morrison served with distinction in command of another battery of the 3rd New York Volunteer Light Artillery. Promoted to Colonel, he recruited a new regiment, the 16th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery, mustered in September 1863 despite the tumult caused by New York City's draft riots of that summer. The 16th fought at Petersburg, and in the reduction of Fort Fisher on the North Carolina coast. Unit records confirm the accuracy of the information contained here on Captain John H. Ammon; he did command Battery I of the 3rd New York Light Artillery, and participated in the successful assault on Fort Macon. Normal mailing folds. Toned around edges.
