CIVIL WAR: UNION. ALS: "Jacob Roberts/U S Army", 4p, 7¾x9¾. Fort Warren, Boston Harbor, 1862 May 7. To Hon. B F Carter, Woodbury N.J. Original spelling. In part: "Here the 'Articles of war' hinder us from telling some things of interest and the other little incidents that happen seem to get into the papers so magnified that they not only become untrue but uninteresting…Gen. Tighlman is allowed to walk on the parapet over our rooms from 9 till 10 am. Genl Buckner from 10 till 11 am. All other times they each have a room to themselves just under ours. There is but few persons about the fort ever allowed to talk with them at all. One of the few always takes them up to walk and brings them down at the proper time. Neither of them are allowed to even recognize any others than Col D and staff. Their parole to the privalege of walking will not allow them to even recognize any of their own friends. And this privalege only given them on account of their health…Genls Gaunt & Mackall enjoy themselves as best they can-in walking and reading the papers…Genl Dix and Co made us a visit to day…." The "Daily Richmond Examiner" of April 10, 1862, reported about Generals Buckner and Tilghman at Fort Warren. Folds, vertical fold touches the "c" in Jacob. 1½-inch separation at right margin at mid-horizontal fold, touching writing (all paper intact). Light stains, lightly shaded at some folds. Overall, in fine condition.
