J. O. Gringston sends an autograph letter during the Civil War.
Autograph Letter signed: "J O Gringston/Adjt.", 1 page, 8x6 lined
sheet. Newport Barracks, North Carolina, 1863 December 21. Headed:
"Circular". In full: "Commanders of Companies of 9th Iy
[Infantry] Vols are requested to select from their several Companies the
(3) three best marksmen to assemble at Newport Barracks N.C. Thursday A.M. (Dec
24th 1863) to attend a Shooting Match. By Command of Edw H Riply". Edward
H. Ripley served as Lt. Colonel of the Ninth Vermont Volunteers from May
1863-June 1865. He was brevetted Brigadier General of Volunteers on
August 1, 1864. The Ninth Vermont, which originally consisted of 920 men and
officers, had been mustered into the Union Army on July 9, 1862 for a period
of three years. The unit was captured at Harper's Ferry in 1862 and spent
six months in Chicago as paroled prisoners before seeing service in Virginia.
In January 27, 1864, the month after this letter was written, the 9th
Vermont Volunteers, which then consisted of 499 men and officers, captured a
Confederate garrison at Young's Cross Roads. The same day, they received
reinforcements of 350 men. The 9th Infantry, which successfully defended
Newport Barracks against an assault by Pickett's troops later in 1864,
participated in a the battles of Chapin's Farm, Fair Oaks and the fall of
Richmond before the final members mustered out in December 1865. Lightly
creased. Lightly soiled at blank left margin. Irregular left and lower edges.
