The 5th Artillery Regiment's acting adjutant, 2nd Lt. William DeMott, signs a manuscript order for 2nd Lt. George Stephenson to take command of Company F (1865).
Manuscript Document signed "William DeMott" as 2nd Lieutenant, Acting Adjutant, 5th Artillery Regiment, New York Volunteers, 1 page, 7¾x9¾. Harper's Ferry, Virginia, 1865 February 18. On regimental letterhead to 2nd Lt. George Stephenson, Commanding Company G, 5th Arty N.Y. Volunteers. By order of Lt. Col. Edward Murray commanding, Lt. Stephenson is ordered to take command of Company H of the Regiment, and to sign receipt of all property transferred to his charge. The 5th Artillery Regiment, N.Y. Volunteers was attached to General Phillip Sheridan's Army of the Shenandoah, participating in several battles of the Shenandoah campaign, including the decisive victory at Cedar Creek (October 19, 1864). Further research would be required to supply details on Lieutenants DeMott and Stephenson and Lt. Colonel Murray. Horizontal fold creases. Right edge chipped. Crease lines on verso toned and soiled. Side edges lightly notched at folds. Very lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
