CIVIL WAR (UNION)
Unsigned list of brigade commanders and their staffs prepared for General Burnside's North Carolina Expedition of 1862.
Document, unsigned, 1 page, 8½11. In ink on white ruled paper. Document titled, "Original Staff of the Brigade Commanders at the Sailing of the N. C. Expedition." This document correctly identifies the three brigade commanders in General Ambrose Burnside's North Carolina Expedition. Although undated, the document must have been written between early February 1862, when the expedition was first launched, and April 2, when a 4th brigade was added to the force. The brigade commanders, brigadier generals all, are correctly identified here as John G. Parker (1st Brigade), Jesse L. Reno (2nd Brigade) and John G. Parke (3rd Brigade). Nineteen subordinate officers, most holding the rank of captain, are also listed. The purpose of Burnside's Expedition was to strengthen the Union blockade of the Confederacy by seizing control of the outer North Carolina banks. Despite Burnside's reputation as a poor general, responsible for the catastrophic Union defeat at Fredericksburg in December 1862, the North Carolina campaign was largely successful, with most of the disputed territory in federal hands by the end of June. Surface creases. Large crease in top right corner. Tear on top margin. Corners and edges worn. Small notch missing on bottom right edge, and tear in bottom edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
