CIVIL WAR: UNION
Carte de Visite of a Matthew Brady photo: a Civil War mascot
Carte de Visite, unsigned. Sepia, 2¼x4. E & HT Anthony backstamp, New York, taken from a Matthew Brady negative. Image of a young boy in uniform, with sergeant's stripes, holding drumsticks and standing beside a drum. The Civil War was the first war to be exhaustively photographed, giving the public a glimpse of the horrific and the humdrum elements of war, not just the heroic moments memorialized in painted art and statuary. This visitor's card was a novelty, though. Although there are competing claims of the youngest drummer in the Union and Confederate armies - and the 21st Indiana Regiment claimed to have enlisted an 8-year old, no child as young as this one could really have served, certainly not as a noncommissioned officer. Toned. Edges and corners worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
