CIVIL WAR: UNION
War-dated receipt for the auction sale of a cavalry horse, signed by an assistant quartermaster
Receipt signed: "[initial and first name illegible] Moore/Capt. & A Q M/Cav Bur", 8x3¼.Williamsport, Pennsylvania, 1864 June 23. In the name of Cavalry Bureau Quartermaster, Lt. Col. James A. Ekin, his deputy signs receipt #67 acknowledging sale at public auction of one Sorrel horse branded U.S.J.P.C. to William Waltman for $13.00. Upon leaving the cavalry quartermaster's post in June 1867, Elkin, by then a brigadier general, reported that in the 3½ years commencing January 1, 1864, he had purchased over 200,000 horses and 50,000 mules and sold 150,000 horses for approximately $15 million. It has been estimated that 1.5 million horses, including draft and artillery horses as well as cavalry mounts, died in the Civil War. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Lower right corner missing. Horizontal and vertical folds. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Creased soiled on verso. Random ink smudges.
