Clara Barton addresses an envelope to Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Gardner.
Autograph Envelope, unsigned, 4x3. 2-cent Washington stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., July 25, 1891; postmarked on verso: Bedford, Indiana, July 27, 1891. Addressed by Barton to: "Dr & Mrs. Joseph Gardner/Bedford/Indiana". In the year she addressed this envelope, Edward and Edwin Baltzley built a three-story, 30-room home in Glen Echo, Maryland for Barton. Remodeled in 1897 as the headquarters of the American Red Cross, which Clara Barton (1821-1912) had founded in 1882, and her permanent residence, the home temporarily served as a warehouse and was crammed with thousands of items to assist victims of wars and natural disasters. The month before Barton addressed this envelope, Russian crops had failed, and Barton, who served as President of the American Red Cross until 1904, would aid in relief efforts there. Creased and soiled. 2¾-inch tear touches 2 words of writing. 1¾-inch separation at upper left edge. Torn open at upper edge. Impression from writing on front. Overall, fragile condition.
