CLARA BARTON
Clara Barton sends an autograph letter of regret that she will not be able to meet some people.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Clara Barton", 1p, 5x8. Worcester, Massachusetts, 1867 March 4. To H.C. Gray, Esqr. In full: "Your kind letter of October 28th Recd. As I am to be in Alton (Ill) on the 2nd of December and have no idea of the time I can leave the West: I shall be unable to meet your people the present winter." In 1866-1867, Clara Barton (1821-1912) was lecturing on her Civil War experiences, which included raising supplies for Union troops, tending to the wounded (which earned her the nickname "Angel of the Battlefield) and, in 1865, at the request of President Lincoln, searching for missing Union soldiers. She then went to Switzerland for her health and while abroad was introduced to the relief efforts of the International Red Cross during the Franco-Prussian War. Barton founded the American Red Cross in 1882, serving as its first President until 1904. Lightly creased. 1-inch separation at blank right margin at horizontal fold, 1¼-inch separation at upper margin at vertical fold and tape stain from previous repair on verso touches the "W" in Worcester. Overall, fine condition.
