CLARA BARTON FORWARDS A $275 CHECK FROM HER NEPHEW TO HER NATIONAL FIRST AID ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA; SHE'D LIKE $75 OF IT "FOR MY PRESENT USE"

CLARA BARTON.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Clara Barton" 2p, 5x6½. Oxford (Mass.), 1906 July 5. To Mr Wells (Roscoe G. Wells). In full: "Ever since I phoned you I have been trying to write, but it has been '4th of July'. Steve & Wife and the Worcester contingent have been here and I could not get a minute. I hope your father is getting on well. Was there ever such a time for accidents? I inclose an indorsed check from Stephen E. Barton for two hundred seventy five ($275) Dolls which I beg you to get cashed retaining the two hundred, giving me credit for it and holding the seventy five for me, when you see me, for my present use. I regret it is so little, but may be better than nothing for the moment. I had a letter from Harriette this morning telling me she had seen you and Mary. Please give my most sincere sympathy to your father, and mother , for I see how this troubles her as well. Pardon this 'snop shot' letter. I will hasten with it to the office myself for the next mail. I am my own errand boy, and thankful I am able to be." STEPHEN E. BARTON was Clara's nephew. On May 14, 1904, CLARA BARTON hadresigned as President of the American National Red Cross, in wake of mounting criticism of her management style, ability and age (82). In April, 1905, she established the National First Aid Association of America and served as honorary president for five years. General ROSCOE G. WELLS was Barton's assistant at the National First Aid Association of America. Fine condition.
