Clara Barton signs a piece of paper.
Signature: "Very respectfully Yours,/Clara Barton.", 4¼x1¾. New England school teacher Clara Barton (1821-1912), who is best known as the founder and first President of the American Red Cross, began her charitable work during the Civil War (1861-1865), organizing means of distributing medical supplies to doctors and field hospitals and relief supplies to soldiers and civilians. While visiting Europe (1869-1870), Barton utilized her organizational abilities to help victims of the Franco-Prussian War. During that time, she became involved with the International Red Cross. Her subsequent founding of the American branch (1881) led to the U.S. signing the Geneva Treaty (1882) for the treatment of wounded during battle and the return of the dead. During her service as the first President of the American Red Cross (1882-1904), Barton often personally took on relief cases. Slightly soiled. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 19½x14¾.
