Autograph Note signed: "Mrs Davidge/with kind regards/yours/Clara
F. Maeder/1927 Girard Avenue", 4¼x3½. Clara Fisher (Maeder), 1811-1898
was an English acting prodigy who first appeared on a London stage
at age 6. Soon she was acting at Covent Garden, even playing the title role
in Richard III, In 1827 her family moved to America, where she was an
immediate success in New York. In fact, the "child wonder" was
enormously popular throughout the US, with poems written for her, babies and
steamboats named for her. She performed with many of the greatest actors of the
19th century, including Edmund Kean, Laura Keene and Edwin Booth. In 1834 she
married composer and vocal coach James Gaspard Maeder; together they opened a
theatre in New Orleans. She retired briefly in 1844, but returned to the
stage, performing into the 1890s. The former "child wonder" was now referred
to as the "oldest living actress." Top right corner torn. Bottom right
corner and bottom edge torn and missing. Toned at right edge. Mounting residue
at verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
