CLARA JESSUP MOORE
The philanthropist and writer pens a friend concerning her failing
health
Autograph Letter Signed: "Clara Jessup Moore," in black ink.
4½x7, 4 pages. The Jenni, Atlantic City. Feb. 24 1896. In part: "Dear
Mr. Drees, I sent you the letter that you wished to have, but make no use of it
while I am living. Your grandson can take charge of it; and give it a place in
your collection when both Mr. Kelly and I have passed out of time into eternity.
My beloved mother said, when dying, 'There is no time like the eternal now.'
Never were these words spoken, for if we live in that is Now as what it should
be, we shall have no past to regret and no future to fear..." The writer
continues to remark on the details of her illness and status of her last will
and testament. Clara Jessup Moore (1824-1889) was an American writer and
philanthropist who is most known for organizing a hospital relief committee
during the Civil War and co-founding the Temperance Home for Children. She
is the author of five books, including Ether and True: The Protoplasm
(1885) and Social Ethics and Duties (1892). This letter dates three
years before her death, prior to her move to London where she remained until she
died.
