Sept 5, 1934" 5x4. On June 16, 1930 WGN-AM Chicago aired radio's first
network daytime soap opera Clara, Lu & Em. Starring Louise Starkey
(1905-1969), Isobel Carothers (1901-1937) and Helen King
(1904-1970), the soap portrayed the story of three women living together in a
shared family duplex. Starkey (Clara), Carothers (Lu) and King (Em) originally
wrote the show as a sorority sketch, and when it first aired, the women agreed
to put on the soap for no pay. With sponsorship from Colgate-Palmolive, Clara,
Lu & Em was picked up by NBC and Blue Network in the mid 1930's. The show
continued until 1937 when Crothers unexpectedly passed away. After that,
King and Starkey quit the show until 1942 when it reemerged on CBS. Toned.
