Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Elsie/Hollingsworth/my/sincere thanks/Claramae Turner". B/w, 7¼x9¼. Known for her opulent voice and impressive stage presence, American contralto Claramae Turner (1920-2013) sang with a number of opera companies, including New York's Metropolitan Opera (debut 1946), the New York Opera and the Chicago Opera (1955-1957), after making her debut in San Francisco in 1942. Turner, who also appeared in the 1956 film, Carousel, as Cousin Nettie, appears on the soundtrack of the film. The popular ballad, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco", made famous by Tony Bennett, was originally written for Turner, who often performed the song as an encore but never recorded it. Ink lightly faded (but legible) at "sincere". Minor 3¾-inch surface crease at upper right background. Photographer's imprint at lower right margin. Pencil note (unknown hand) and lightly soiled on verso (no show thorough). Overall, fine condition.
