Photograph signed: "Sincerely/Clarence Derwent". B/w, 3¼x5¾.
English-born stage and film actor, director and producer Clarence Derwent
(1884-1959) played character roles in films, including Stanley and
Livingston, and had an even richer stage resume. He made his first
on-stage Broadway appearance in 1915, and staged and produced his first play
there (The Family Fails) in 1925. Derwent was President of US
Actors' Equity from 1946 to 1952. He endowed the coveted Clarence Derwent
Awards, given annually by Actors' Equity to the best supporting male and
female stage performances in both New York and London. Adhesive residue on
verso. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
