CLARICE MAYNE
Sentiment of the English singer and actress, star of many
pantomimes
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Best Wishes/Clarice Mayne",
4¼x1½. Clarice Mayne (1886-1966) starred in English music halls and
variety theatre, often billed as "Clarice Mayne and That" (Mayne singing as
"This", her husband James W. Tate playing the piano as "That". Until Tate's
death in 1922, he composed most of her songs, including her hits "Broken
Doll" and "I Was a Good Little Girl, Till I Met You". From World War I
through the 1920s, she played principal girl or principal boy in many popular
pantomimes, including Cinderella and Puss in Boots.
("Principal boy" roles were considered sexier, since they allowed actresses to
eschew the modest female dresses of the era.) Mayne appeared in a few films,
including the silent Nursie! Nursie! (1916), and Educated Evans
(1936). Soiled. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
