CLARK GRIFFITH and OSSIE BLUEGE
Photo by Tenschert Studio, Washington, D.C. President Truman throws out the first baseball of the season as his wife and daughter watch. Also pictured are Admirals Nimitz and Leahy, and Boston's Joe Cronin. Griffith has signed on a man's white hat in the center foreground, Bluege has signed on Cronin's image.
Photograph signed: "Clark Griffith" and "Ossie Bluege". B/w, 10x8. Hall of Famer Clark Griffith (1869-1955), first New York Highlanders (Yankees) manager in 1903, revolutionized baseball as an executive. He initiated the use of a "speed gun" to time pitches and juggled pitching rotations to ensure his biggest gate attractions would appear on weekends. Infielder Ossie Bluege (1900-1985) played his entire career with the Washington Senators (1922-1939), playing in all three of the team's World Series appearances (1924-1925, 1933) and only World Championship (1924). An outstanding defensive third baseman, he could also play the other infield positions. After his playing days, Bluege coached and managed (1943-1947) the Senators, and directed their farm system. Toned. Creases throughout. Corners rounded and creased. Signatures faint but mostly legible.
