CLAUDE AUTANT-LARA
The controversial French film director is shown on a set in this
4½x3½ photograph
Photograph signed: "Friendly yours.../Claude Autant-Lara".
B/w, 4½x3½. French screenwriter and director Claude Autant-Lara
(1901-2000), an actor and art director in silent films, came to
Hollywood in 1930 to direct French-language versions of Buster Keaton films.
Returning to France in 1932, he became a prolific director (and sometime
screenwriter) into the 1960s. His popularity waned with the rise of the "New
Wave" directors. Among his best remembered films are Devil in the Flesh
(1947) The Red Inn (1951) and the French TV mini-series Lucien
Leuwen (1973-1974). Autant-Lara's politics moved from socialist and atheist
in his youth to ultra-conservative in his senior years. In 1998 he was
elected to the European Parliament on the National Front ticket, but
resigned the following year when his racial views, and his outspoken Holocaust
denial, aroused intense criticism. Ink light but legible. Fine
condition.
