CLAUDE J. G. MONTEFIORE
ALS requesting an open-minded appraisal of one of his books
Autograph Letter signed: "C. J. Montefiore", 3 pages (front
and verso, integral leaf), 4½x7. 12 Portman Square (London), undated. To
"dear Mr. Landau". In full: "When I get a bound copy of the 2nd
edition of my book in which many misprints are corrected, I will send it bound
to you and ask you to return this temporary copy of the first edition. I shall
like to hear what you think of it. Read it like an outsider just without
prejudice one way or the other. Can you give me that thinking & Levy's
London address please? Sincerely". Claude Joseph Goldsmid Montefiore
(*1848-1938) was an influential English writer, interested in modern Jewish
religious thought, Jewish-Christian relations, and Anglo-Jewish politics. He
was editor of the Jewish Quarterly Review. Some of his fellows Jews believed
that Montefiore went too far in trying to "modernize" the faith, and was too
sympathetic to Christian figures Jesus and Paul. Among his influential essays
were "Liberal Judaism" (1903), "Judaism and St Paul" (1914) and "What a Jew
Thinks About Jesus" (1935). He was a member of the School Board of London,
actively involved in both public and Jewish education. Horizontal fold at
center. 1½x1 inch soil stain on verso (slight show through). Lightly creased.
Otherwise, fine condition.
