CLAUDE RAINS
Oscar-nominated actor Claude Rains wrote this letter on the back of a Joan Míro picture postcard in 1958 to his daughter Jennifer about his attempts to drive to West Chester, Pennsylvania in a snowstorm. From the estate of Claude Rains.
Autograph letter signed "C. C." in blue ink. 1 page, 5¾x4. Written on the back of a color picture postcard of Joan Miro's Composition. Post card by Walter Classen of Zürich, Switzerland for Artext Prints, Inc. Westport, Connecticut. Postmarked Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1958. Addressed to Jenni Rains. Bennington College, Bennington, Vermont. Two 1¢ green-and-white George Washington stamps affixed. In full: "Had to go to West Chester re house, so [illegible] very early thinking I could lick the snow. The roads were [illegible] & far from clean and I never got there. Turned back at Exton & was lucky to get here. Looks like I'll be stuck for a day or 20. Love". From the estate of Claude Rains. "Jenni Rains" was Claude Rains' only child Jennifer Rains. She became an actress in her own right, changing her name to Jessica Rains. Rains lived in West Chester, Pennsylvania from 1941 to 1956, when he became divorced from fourth wife Frances Propper. Rains (1889-1967), who played the title role in The Invisible Man (1933), was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in 1939 (as the "bought" Senator Paine in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington), 1943 (Inspector Louis Renault in Casablanca), 1944 (title role in Mr. Skeffington) and 1946 (Ingrid Bergman's Nazi husband in Notorious). Lightly toned and bowed. Normal postal stamps. Postmark touches letter but not signature. Otherwise in fine condition.
