CLAUDE RAINS
Claude Rains wrote this letter on the back of an Amedeo Modigliani picture postcard to his daughter Jennifer Rains in 1958. From the estate of Claude Rains.
Autograph letter signed "C. C." in purple ink. Green ink notations in unknown hand. 1 page, 6x3¾. Written on verso of a color postcard of Amedeo Modigliani's Ritratto di Paul Guillaume. Printed in Milan, Italy. Written on "Sunday",postmarked Beverly Hills, Sept. 7, 1958. In full: "Tomorrow I plane to Casa Lual Napa. California, 40 miles above 'Fresco' [sic]. Phone [phone number] Back here albout Oct 4 Finish about Oct 31 'Miracle' out. Borrow Whitehead' F. B. I. Story & read about the Princess. Wow!! More news when I gete there.". From the estate of Claude Rains. Jennifer Rains was Claude Rains' only child. She later became an actor and changed her name to Jessica Rains. Rains (1889-1967), who played the title role in The Invisible Man (1933), was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in 1939 (as the "bought" Senator Paine in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington), 1943 (Inspector Louis Renault in Casablanca), 1944 (title role in Mr. Skeffington) and 1946 (Ingrid Bergman's Nazi husband in Notorious). Lightly toned, soiled and bowed. Normal postal stamps. Postmark touches letter but not signature. Worn corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
