In full: "Thank you for your wire and for your graciousness in coming back to see me after the play last night. I do indeed appreciate your thoughtfulness. Yours". Pencil note (unknown hand) at lower margin. CLAUDERAINS (1889-1967), who played the title role in The Invisible Man (1933), was nominated four times for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in 1939 (as the "bought" Senator Paine in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington), 1943 (Inspector Louis Renault in Casablanca), 1944 (title role in Mr. Skeffington) and 1946 (Ingrid Bergman's Nazi husband in Notorious). Rains won a Tony in 1951 (Best Actor in a Play) for his performance in Darkness at Noon, a play by Sidney Kingsley based on the novel by Arthur Koestler. The play opened at the Alvin Theatre on January 13, running for six months. Altogether Rains appeared in 18 Broadway plays over three decades (1926-1956). Gilbert Miller (1884-1970) was a Broadway playwright and producer, himself the winner of two Tony Awards. Miller was not involved in the production of Darkness at Noon, but one of his many productions, Ring Around the Moon, closed in New York the same day Rains' performance began. Pencil note (unknown hand) at bottom edge. Mailing fold through center. Otherwise, fine condition.
