CLAUDIA MUZIO. Photograph inscribed and signed: "Claudia Muzio/B.A. [Buenos Aires] 1935". Sepia, 5x7. Three-line inscription in Italian (not translated) above signature. Italian soprano Claudia Muzio (1889-1936) was known for her impressive stage presence and emotional involvement in all the leading Verdi and Puccini roles, including Tosca, Cio-Cio-San (in Madama Butterfly) and Giorgetta. In addition to being a popular performer at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for seven seasons (she had made her debut there in Tosca), Muzio was much in demand in the principal South American opera houses. She also performed extensively in Italy, making notable appearances under Toscannini at La Scala in 1926-1927, before singing mostly thereafter in Rome. Muzio's unique voice could also be heard on early (1917-1918) Pathé and Edison (1920-1925) recordings as well as later Columbia recordings (1934-1935). Writing is light but legible. Lightly creased and soiled (not at facial image). Lightly worn at corners. Overall, fine condition.
