CLAUDIA MUZIO. Photograph signed: "Claudia Muzio". B/w, 4¾x6¼. One line of writing in Italian (not translated) above signature. Pictured with Sigfrido Grassi Diaz, a personal friend, circa 1934. Italian soprano Claudia Muzio (1889-1936) was known for her impressive stage presence and emotional involvement in all the leading Verdi and Puccini roles, including Tosca, Cio-Cio-San (in Madama Butterfly) and Giorgetta. In addition to being a popular performer at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for seven seasons (she had made her debut there in Tosca), Muzio was much in demand in the principal South American opera houses (likely when she signed this photograph). She also performed extensively in Italy, making notable appearances under Toscannini at La Scala in 1926-1927, before singing mostly thereafter in Rome. Muzio's unique voice could also be heard on early (1917-1918) Pathé and Edison (1920-1925) recordings as well as later Columbia recordings (1934-1935). Identifying ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Lightly creased, minor surface smudges. Upper right edge and corner torn away, chipped at upper right edge. No show through of ink and pencil notes on verso. Overall, fine condition.
