CLAUDIA MUZIO. Program Page signed: "Claudia Muzio", 1p, 5¼x5¼. Rome, 1929 May. Program page from Verdi's La Forza Del Destino (The Force of Destiny), in which Muzio sang the role of Donna Leonora. The opera, which was premiered at the Imperial Theater in St. Petersburg, was later revived at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1869. Italian soprano Claudia Muzio (1889-1936) was known for her impressive stage presence and emotional involvement in all the leading Verdi and Puccini roles, including Tosca, Cio-Cio-San (in Madama Butterfly) and Giorgetta. In addition to being a popular performer at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for seven seasons (she had made her debut there in Tosca), Muzio was much in demand in the principal South American opera houses. She also performed extensively in Italy, making notable appearances under Toscannini at La Scala in 1926-1927, before singing mostly thereafter in Rome, where she signed this program page. Muzio's unique voice could also be heard on early (1917-1918) Pathé and Edison (1920-1925) recordings as well as later Columbia recordings (1934-1935). Page has separated at mid-vertical fold, splitting the signature at the "d" of Claudia. Lightly creased with folds, ¼-inch separation at right blank margin at lower horizontal fold on right half of page. Torn at upper edge, affecting two words of title.
